Oh, February.
This month is beautiful in its own way, to be sure, but it can also be the time of year when the winter begins to overstay its welcome. A sort of in-between season -- not quite mid-winter, but not quite yet spring. There are little hints of what is to come in the angle of the sunlight in the afternoons and the lengthening of the evenings, little bit by little bit, but when will the springtime truly get here and the world begin to warm up?
February can also be a tricky time of year to stay well. Not only do many cold and flu viruses begin to cycle around again this time of year, but it can also be a bit of a confusing time for the body. The heavy, grounding foods of mid-winter may no longer be quite so supportive and we may start to feel sluggish, manifesting in slow digestion, low mood, and other physical, mental and emotional ailments. This is the kapha season according to Ayurveda -- the season of cold and dampness -- and many of us can really start to feel that in our bodies at around this time, which is why it is important to eat in a way that uplifts, energizes and warms the body, without making us feel sluggish.
There are many foods, herbs and spices that can come in as wonderful allies to help us through this season, but one of the best (and easiest to come by) is none other than the humble ginger root -- Zingiber officinale. This spicy, zesty, warming rhizome is amazing at stoking up a sluggish digestive system, stimulating optimal circulation, and warming the body from the inside out, so making it a regular part of the diet in this season can work wonders in promoting optimal wellness!
Of the many ways to enjoy ginger, one of our new favourites for this time of year is through an easy, creamy, soul-warming herbal latté using a spoonful of Ginger Warmer elixir honey. Like a warm hug in a mug, this delightful drink is the perfect thing to soothe the spirit, warm the bones, and keep your inner fire burning strong as we make our way through the end of winter.
Whatever you do, stay warm and stay strong -- Spring is just around the corner!
